As the Big Ten football season gets underway, review 2008 conference rankings and bowl game results. Will Penn State keep its number one ranking in the 2009 season?

With Big Ten 2009 fall football underway, this season's teams are predicted to change standings based on 2008 college football data. Top-standing 2008 teams Ohio State and Penn State have the most non-returning players entering the fall 2009 season, with 13 and 14 players respectively. These player losses will impact the starting lineups.

As a whole, the Big Ten Conference exhibits strength across the conference teams in the 2009 season with 26 all-conference players returning from last season, as well as an additional 22 honorable mention honorees from the 2008 season.

The Bleacher Report announced in a recent article by J.A. Allen entitled, "Iowa-Penn State: A Changing of the Guard in the Big Ten," on this season's first big win in which Iowa picked off Penn State. According to the Associated Press Top 25, Iowa boosted its ranking based on this win and moved into 13th place, while Penn State slipped to 15th.

Currently, Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Iowa lead the Big 10 Conference in conference and full season games played through September 27, 2009.

2008/2009 Big Ten Football Bowl Game Results

Number one Big Ten ranked Penn State lost in a close match with Southern California in the Rose Bowl. Down 31-7 in the second quarter, Penn rallied late in fourth quarter to lose the game at 38-24. The Big Ten saw its only win from Iowa in the Outback Bowl and ended the season with a 1-6 bowl record.

2009 Big Ten College Football Data

The 2009 Big Ten Conference season shows several teams powering ahead of last year's standings, with Iowa having already toppled Penn State. In 2009 season play up to September 27, 2009, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Iowa top the standings this far with each team fairing 1-0 records in conference play and 4-0 records in full season play to date.
