Are Iowa and Cincinnati Ready to Crash the National Title Party?

The Hawkeyes and Bearcats are still looking for BCS National Championship recognition with undefeated records, and TCU continues their push to be a BCS-buster.

Is Iowa really an underrated program? Where's the love for Boise State and Cincinnati? Is there a program worthy of slipping into the National Title picture under the radar?

Those are the questions being tossed around as the NCAA football season enters November play.

Do the Cincinnati Bearcats and Boise State Broncos Deserve a National Championship Berth?

It seems like Boise State and Cincinnati supporters really believe that the Broncos and Bearcats deserve BCS National Championship bids. But, the same argument is brought up when these talks start up. Who has Boise State and Cincinnati really beaten? Ok, yes, Boise State defeated the Oregon Ducks in the first game of the season, but other than that, their level of competition is lacking the "BCS Spark."

It is understandable that if Boise State or Cincinnati played against SEC programs like Florida or Alabama, or Big-12 powerhouses Texas and Oklahoma, their cries for respect would be answered.

Hawkeyes Comebacks Could Hurt BCS Title Push

The most trendy topic right now across the nation is Iowa's late rallies to win games. Hawkeye's quarterback Ricky Stanzi has led Iowa to four fourth quarter comebacks in the 2009 season. Is this a sign of weakness, or, is this just a reason to praise the Hawkeyes team?

If Iowa plans to swoop in and steal a spot in the National Championship game, they must first conquer the Big Ten giant Ohio State Buckeyes. Iowa better not dig themselves a hole going into the fourth quarter against the Buckeyes because that very well might be their BCS Title grave.

The Mighty Ducks of Eugene, Oregon Could be the Sleeper Pick of the Year

Chip Kelly's Ducks can cross the USC Trojans off of their top-25 list of teams to beat. First it was the Utah Utes, then the Cal Golden Bears, and now, Oregon can say that they've toppled the giant of the Pac-10 after beating Pete Carroll's Trojans.

Oh, what could have been if it weren't for their loss at Boise State in week one. However, there are many games still to be played in this 2009 football season, and the Ducks' BCS Title door is not closed in any way.

Imagine this scenario. Alabama falls to LSU on November 7th, 2009, then, Iowa can't hold off Ohio State. Oregon could propel themselves to the number three spot in the BCS standings. All the Ducks would need is a miracle that either Florida drops the ball in the SEC Championship game, and Texas gets stunned against Kansas or Texas A&M.

But those are extreme "What if?" scenarios. For now, this how the BCS Bowl Series should pan out.

BCS Bowl Series Projections (November)

Orange Bowl

Miami vs. Cincinnati

Virginia Tech has been on a slide as of late, and it doesn't look like they're going to be ACC Champions this season. This now paves the way for Miami to take the prize. Sorry Georgia Tech fans, there's no BCS bowl game for the Yellow Jackets this season. Wake Forest and Duke are projected to give Georgia Tech a tough time at the end of the season, and will cost the 'Jackets the bowl bid. Cincinnati's lackluster schedule will keep them out of the BCS National Championship game and instead, have the Bearcats playing yet again in the Orange Bowl game.

Fiesta Bowl

Iowa vs. Boise State

Sorry Hawkeyes fans, but a projected loss to Ohio State will start the downhill slide for this upstart Iowa team. This loss in Columbus, Ohio, combined with a projected poor outing against Minnesota will bump the Hawkeyes out of the National Title picture, and also a Rose Bowl bid. Boise State will again settle for a Fiesta Bowl bid even with an undefeated season, thanks to a weak schedule.

Sugar Bowl

Alabama vs. TCU

The team that loses the SEC Championship game will get a spot in the Sugar Bowl, and that will be Alabama. Many have picked Cincinnati to play here, but TCU are going to slide in to this bowl game from the Mountain West. The Horned Frogs are the new Utah Utes.

Rose Bowl

Oregon vs. Penn State

Penn State is projected to slip into the Rose Bowl this year in place of Iowa who could stumble at the finish line. The Pac-10 Champions headline this game, and there's no doubt about it that USC's reign is now over as conference champions after their loss to the Oregon Ducks in Eugene on October 31st, 2009.

2010 BCS National Championship Projection

Florida vs. Texas

This is the game the nation wants to see. After last year's BCS blunder, we will all see what should have been the 2009 BCS National Championship game this time around.

Texas will come into this game as an undefeated second-ranked team in the BCS standings, and Florida will enter the BCS Championship game as the top-ranked team after a projected thrashing of Alabama, yet again, in the SEC Championship game in December.

This might be the biggest National Championship game in NCAA division I football history. Florida's Tim Tebow finally facesTexas' Colt McCoy, as both Heisman candidates battle each other in the final game of their college football careers.

Although a loss at Ohio State is possible...projecting a hawkeye loss to lowly Minnesota AT Kinnick Stadium (the same Minnesota that suffered a 50 point beatdown last year at the hands of the hawkeyes on their home turf) doesn't seem like the best pick. Iowa finishes 11-1 and plays Oregon in the Rose Bowl.

Remember too, timing is everything. No. 16 Ohio State and no. 11 Penn State play this weekend. A win here by Penn would knock the Buckeyes down the rankings for their game against Iowa. A lower ranked Ohio State team beating a fourth ranked Iowa team would send the Hawkeyes tumbling down the ranks. Perfect opportunity for Penn State to jump back into the top ten and Rose Bowl picture.

I can't believe you would pick Duke over GA Tech. Ga Tech has the best offense in the the ACC by far right now. Miami is struggling on defense and lost to Clemson (who they would have to beat in the ACC championship to go to the orange bowl by the way). Miami has numerous defensive injuries. You can't tell me they're going to win the rest of their games and beat Clemson. Miami will drop another one to either UNC or South Florida, so even if GA Tech does lose to Duke, they'll still get in over Miami.

Strange things have happened in the NCAA, you can't rule out a Duke or Wake upset over GA Tech. Also, don't be so sure about Clemson. Boston College wins the ACC atlantic. As for Miami, they're on edge right now after that loss to Clemson. They have a lot more to play for right now. Expectations are high. Love the heart of the Hurricanes team to thrust them to the Orange Bowl

So, to all those Iowa Hawkeyes fans out there, I hate to say I told you so...

Northwestern 17 - Iowa 10 Final.

There's a reason why I didn't buy into the Hawkeyes. They aren't the team supporters all say they are.

Brad Purdy: I'm 51 and grew up watching Boise State when it was a junior college. In literally the past 10 years, Boise State has risen from an unknown, lower echelon Division 1 team, to a predictable, top 25 powerhouse, with a budget a minute fraction of countless, storied football programs, even going undefeated roughly 4 out of the past 6 years. Yes, BSU's schedule is weak, but when asked to take on Oregon, this year, or Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl several years ago, BSU prevailed. They have a momentum that should no longer be overlooked. My only diss is that their athletic director needs to risk his enviable position by agreeing to take on stronger opponents in the immediate future if BSU is to be given the credit it deserves.

Brad, don't get me wrong, I love what Boise State has been doing as a football program. They're an extremely talented and an exciting team to watch.

The problem I have is within their schedule. Imagine if Boise State took Bowling Green and UC Davis out of their schedule and replaced those two games with USC, Alabama, LSU, Texas, Florida, or Ohio State.

If BSU managed to go undefeated with two wins against past champions, or programs that played for a BCS National title, then I would have NO PROBLEM admitting Boise State should be considered for a spot in the National Championship.

P.S- Kellen Moore should be considered for the Heisman. Solid QB

unfortunately, the Alabama Crimson Tide will NOT be 2009-2010 BCS National Champions. The offense is built around Mark Ingram, and with him injured, things are a little out of wack. Even if he plays, he will get shut down and lose the Heisman trophy.

Gators are too balanced of a team. Tebow is on a solid mission, and the senior class is just too talented to overlook. Gators roll in Georgia this week. Florida 28- Alabama 17

Mike, I love how you posted this jackoff's national championship spam, but you won't post my comment about Ga Tech. How can you possibly run a blog about football and not discuss both sides of a point? I had my prediction about Ga Tech going to the orange bowl, and you dismissed it as crap. I was right, and now you won't admit it.

Boise State does deserve respect. Hello...They beat Oklahoma in the Fiesta bowl and are 72-4 in a decade. Also the have an open date to play anyone, anywhere next season. Know one has answered the call. Maybe get on the phone to Florida, Alabama, Texas and tell them not to be so scared. If they are certain they can beat Boise then what's the deal its more promotion for their program. If Boise wins well you get a few pissed off people but guess what... We can play ball here in the West.

first, the GA. Tech issue. I didn't pick them at the start of the month because they seemed shaky at times. I'll admit, I was wrong. It's going to be a barn burner against Clemson, but, I'll give it to Tech. They were the surprise of the ACC this year. Good on the Jackets!

Next, Boise State. Again, I'm a fan of what they're doing out there on the blue turf. I would love nothing more than the big boys in the NCAA offices to step in and set this straight. I have a solution to this problem. crossovers. Example: WAC plays Big 12. It allows Boise State to play 2 or more Non-Conference games against a locked-in, mandatory conf. Boise St. would have to play two programs selected at random by a computer system. This should be mandatory throughout the whole league.

This will give chances to TCU, BYU, Boise St and others to gain respect. BYU vs. Florida? TCU vs. LSU? Boise State vs. Texas? it would be a great thought. Yes? No? thoughts?
