ACC Championship Game Berths Up For Grabs

Nov 18, 2008 Kyle Schurman

The ACC college football divisional races to determine the qualifiers for the ACC Championship Game couldn't be tighter with two weeks to go.

Nine of the Atlantic Coast Conference's 12 teams remain alive for a berth in the ACC Championship Game, which will be played Dec. 6 in Tampa, Fla. The ACC football tie-breaker scenarios almost certainly will receive a workout after the games are completed, as it appears at least one of the two divisions will have a tie for first.

Here are the teams still alive for each divisional title and a trip to the ACC Championship Game in the Atlantic Coast Conference, along with the ACC football tie-breaker possibilities.

Atlantic Division

  • Maryland 4-2. Maryland has a clear-cut path to the ACC Championship Game. If the Terps win their final two ACC games, they win the division. Remaining games: vs. Florida State 11/22, at Boston College 11/29.
  • Wake Forest 4-3. Wake needs a win in its final ACC game, and the Deacons probably need Maryland to lose twice as Maryland defeated Wake Forest 26-0 earlier this season, giving the Terps the tie-breaker edge. Remaining game: vs. Boston College 11/22.
  • Florida State 4-3. FSU needs to defeat Maryland to have any hope of winning the division. FSU also could use losses by Boston College and Wake Forest, as both schools hold the tie-breaker edge on Florida State. Remaining game: at Maryland 11/22.
  • Boston College 3-3. BC is still alive, thanks to the fact that it still has games remaining against teams ahead of the Eagles in the standings. With wins in its final two games, Boston College will win the division, as it will hold all of the ACC football tie-breaker scenarios. BC has defeated Florida State already this season, 27-17. Remaining games: at Wake Forest 11/22, vs Maryland 11/29.

Coastal Division

  • Miami 4-2. The Hurricanes control their own fate in the Coastal. Win the final two games, and Miami will play in the ACC Championship Game, no tie-breaker required. However, both games are on the road. Remaining games: at Georgia Tech 11/20, at NC State 11/29.
  • Georgia Tech 4-3. Tech remains in the hunt, but it must defeat Miami and then hope for some help as the Yellow Jackets have lost to each of the three teams directly behind them in the standings. Remaining game: vs Miami 11/20.
  • North Carolina 3-3. UNC must win its final two games, and then hope for some help. North Carolina holds the tie-breaker edge with wins over Miami and Georgia Tech, but the Tar Heels have lost to Virginia and Virginia Tech. Remaining games: vs NC State 11/22, at Duke 11/29.
  • Virginia Tech 3-3. Virginia Tech must win its final two games and hope for some help. Tech has beaten Georgia Tech and UNC already this season, but lost head to head against Miami. Remaining games: vs Duke 11/22, vs Virginia 11/29.
  • Virginia 3-3. The Cavaliers need to win their final two games and hope for some help. Virginia holds the tie-breaker edge over Georgia Tech and North Carolina, but the Cavs lost to Miami. Remaining games: vs Clemson 11/22, at Virginia Tech 11/29.
