Number 2 Bama Dominates Chattanooga Mocs to Remain Unbeaten

Crimson Tide football moves within one game of its second consecutive undefeated season with its 11th straight victory this season and a possible national championship.

The Alabama Crimson Tide had a near perfect game in their victory over Tennessee-Chattanooga. Alabama’s defense completely overwhelmed the Mocs throughout the game. Coach Saban pulled his first string players at the half. Star Jackson quarterbacked the second half, along with giving the second string and other back up players a chance to play in the victory over Chattanooga. Number 2 (BCS) Alabama improved its record to 11 – 0.

Crimson Tide’s (11 – 0, 7 – 0 SEC) stifling defense, fourth in the nation, held Tennessee-Chattanooga (6 – 5, 4 – 4 SoCon) to 48 yards rushing and 36 yards receiving for a total of 84 yards. The Alabama Crimson Tide rushed for 313 yards and 109 yards receiving for a total of 422 yards. Bama held the Mocs to five first downs, while completing 26.

Alabama’s Greg McElroy completed 6 of 11 passes for 80 yards during the game. So far this season, his totals are 159 – 334 – 4 for 1993 yards and 14 touchdowns. Crimson Tide’s Mark Ingram rushed 11 times for 102 yards and two touchdowns, giving him a total of 205 rushes for 1399 yards, 6.8 yard rushing average, and 15 touchdowns so far this season.

Julio Jones was the Crimson Tide’s leading receiver with three receptions for 66 yards and one touchdown. Roy Upchurch and Trent Richardson both had a rushing touchdown, with a combined 130 yards rushing in 26 attempts.

Leigh Tiffin (25 – 28) kicked a 41 yard field goal and five point after kicks during the game. This field goal and extra points extends his lead as Alabama’s all time scoring leader to 362 points. Alabama leads the Tennessee-Chattanooga series11 – 0.

Crimson Tide Football First Half Action

The first quarter resulted in three touchdowns by the Crimson Tide. The first was a two yard rushing touchdown by Trent Richardson; the second was a 25 yard rushing touchdown by Mark Ingram. Alabama’s third touchdown was a 19 yard pass by Greg McElroy to Julio Jones.

Chattanooga’s three possessions ended in two punts by Mike Hammons and an interception of Jare Gualt’s pass by Cory Reamer on the Mocs’ 28 yard line. This interception led to Julio Jones’ touchdown reception. Alabama lead at the end of the first quarter 21 – 0.

Tennessee-Chattanooga’s first drive of the second quarter resulted in a punt by Hammons and a 66 yard punt return by Javier Arenas for a touchdown. Chattanooga’s second possession ended with a turnover on downs at the Bama 38 yard line.

Alabama’s first drive of the quarter resulted in an Ingram’s 40 yard touchdown run and his second touchdown of the game.

Chattanooga’s third possession of the game lasted six plays and went 36 yards ending in an interception by Javier Arenas on Bama’s 22 yard line. The Crimson Tide moved the ball 17 yards in six plays and then punted with 1:25 remaining in the half. The half ended with the Mocs in possession of the ball and the Crimson Tide leading 35 – 0.

Bama Football Second Half Action

The third quarter was largely a defensive struggle by both teams. The only score of the quarter was an Alabama 41 yard field goal by Leigh Tiffin. This was Tiffin’s 25th of the season.

The Mocs’ first possession of the quarter ended in an interception by Justin Woodall on the Chattanooga’s 41 yard line. The Mocs’ two other possessions ended in punts. The third quarter ended with Bama leading 38 – 0.

The fourth quarter was dominated by the Crimson Tide. Alabama’s first possession of the quarter ended with a missed 43 field goal attempt by Jeremy Shelley. Bama’s second possession resulted in a 21 yard rushing touchdown by Roy Upchurch and the successful extra point was kicked by Jeremy Shelley.

Chattanooga’s two possessions of the fourth quarter ended in punts by Mike Hammons. The game ended with the Crimson Tide winning 45 – 0.

Alabama Football Wrap Up and Future Schedule

Alabama football continues to roll over its opponents this season. Offensively, McElroy had no interceptions for the second game in a row. Ingram scored two rushing touchdowns, including one for 40 yards, to remain in the Heisman Trophy hunt. Ingram managed his sixth 100 yard effort of the last seven games with only 11 carries during the game.

Javier Arenas set the SEC career record with his seventh punt return for a touchdown, sprinting 66 yards down the right sideline in the second quarter and he also had an interception. Defensively, this is the sixth time the Tide held opponents to seven points or less this season.

The Alabama Crimson Tide visits Auburn (7 – 4, 3 – 4 SEC) for its next game on Friday November 27th Alabama leads the series 39 – 33 – 1. The teams last met in 2008, when Bama broke Auburn’s six game winning streak and scored their first victory over Auburn in Tuscaloosa, 36 – 0.
