Big 12 South Dominates Entire Conference

It may be time to think about re-doing the divisional split-up

Dec 7, 2008 Adam Hilt

The Big 12 North has become the very small, insignificant brother of the Big 12 South; it may be time to fix that.

Season of Woes

The Big 12 North has not had a very big year when it comes to facing the teams from the division to their south. Missouri was beaten around by Oklahoma in the Conference Championship Game which just continues to show the disparity between the Big 12's Divisions. Ever since the downfall of the Nebraska Program it has been happening slowly, the south wins more and more games when they play the North. This year it finally hit rock bottom for the Northerners; The BCS standings have five Big 12 teams in the top 25, four of which are from the Big 12 South. Missouri, the only shining light in the North, was taken to the cleaners by both Texas and Oklahoma, it is time for a change.

Re-do the Divisions

The only way that the current hilarity of the two divisions may be rectified is by shuffling the teams into two new divisions. Of course that would split up major rivals and take away some of the better games the Big 12 has each yer; but new big games would be born. The first thing that would need to happen is a Red river split; Oklahoma and Texas could not remain in the same division. They are both just too good; Texas Tech and Oklahoma State would also probably be split up as they are the other two ranked Big 12 South Teams. Missouri and Kansas would be a toss up, trying to split them would destroy the oldest rivalry game west of the Mississippi, but both teams have been ranked the last two years. Even if KU and MU were kept in the same division, Nebraska could not be in there with them.

East vs. West?

They way it makes the most sense is to have an East/West set up; this could be easily done based on location. The east would Have Iowa State, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Baylor. The west would welcome in Texas, Texas A&M, Texas tech, Colorado, K-State and Nebraska. This set up would split major powers and yes probably result in a lot of Texas-Oklahoma Championship games, but at least there is power in each division. This change would also not need to be used in all sport, maybe just football. Whatever the way, something needs to be done or the Big 12 North will become a laughing stock; even more than it is now.
