The Texas Tech Red Raiders are the reason that Colt McCoy and the Texas Longhorns did not make it to the Big 12 championship and the national championship in 2008.
The Longhorns remember last year’s 33-39 heart-breaker and will look for a little revenge this Saturday. Last year’s game was one of the most entertaining matchup of 2008. Colt McCoy rallied Texas to take the lead, but then had to watch from the sideline as Michael Crabtree caught the game-winning touchdown with only one second left on the clock. This game stopped Texas from playing in the Big 12 championship game, even though they defeated Oklahoma, and it may have even cost McCoy the Heisman Trophy. McCoy and the Longhorns remember this game as they prepare for this Saturday, and will not be stopped in their path for the national title, and it seems as though McCoy may not be stopped in his quest for Heisman. Of course, Texas Tech is not the same team this year after losing Graham Harrell and Michael Crabtree, but Mike Leach always has a good passing game. Texas Tech’s new starting quarterback, Taylor Potts, has thrown for nine touchdowns already and has the Red Raiders 2-0. He has averaged over 400 yards in the first two games. Texas has a much stronger defense than Tech’s past two defenses, which is why the Longhorns are No. 2 in the nation right now. This year’s contest between the Longhorns and Red Raiders will be shown on ABC this Saturday at 7 p.m. Central. This game will also be the site for ESPN’s College GameDay. McCoy for HeismanTexas quarterback Colt McCoy and Florida quarterback Tim Tebow seem to be the top two candidates for the Heisman Trophy, but there is no telling who may be added to the race through the season. Last year’s Heisman winner, Sam Bradford, is pretty much out of the race after injuring his shoulder since he will miss around four weeks. McCoy finished second behind Bradford in the 2008 Heisman race even though he beat Bradford and the Sooners that season. Cal running back, Jahvid Best, also looks to be a top player in the country and may end up in the final three for the trophy. Texas vs. Texas Tech Series HistoryTexas leads the series against Texas Tech 43-15. Texas with Mack Brown as head coach is 44-6 against Texas schools. This is Brown’s twelfth year with the Longhorns. Last year was probably the most memorable matchup between these two schools. Not only was it a down-to-the wire game, but it led to Texas not making the national championship game. Texas was ranked No. 1 at the time and Texas Tech was No. 6. This is an intense rivalry, but it is unlikely that the Red Raiders will be able to stop Texas. Colt McCoy is just too good of a quarterback to lose this game.
